The nursing shortage is experienced worldwide due to limited health care providers. Currently, According to (Cherry & Jacob, 2016), the United States is experiencing a lack of qualified health care professional in the health care system. Due to limited qualified medical practitioners, patients are affected drastically because of the impact that the shortage has on the health care system. Patient care is becoming a concern, especially with the Baby Boomer increase. Baby Boomer era is happening in the situation whereby there is nurses shortage increasing the negative impact on the care that a patient receives. The primary cause of the nurses’ shortage is because of the increase in the number of nurses retiring and resigning. This is inversely proportional to the number of student nurses who are getting enrolled in the nursing school for nursing training.

The second cause could be due to an increase in the number of people who require nursing care, thus increasing the demand for nursing care. In the end, the nurses’ shortage occurs. Most elderly individuals and the increase in the number of patients suffering from lifestyle disease require nursing care the most than any other therapeutic administration. On close checking, the number of health care professionals who are less than thirty years in the medical field is less. This means that the number of students who are being enrolled in nursing schools for the past few years has been drastically decreasing. Shortage of nurses causes a problematic situation for the few nurses who are in practice (Cherry & Jacob, 2016). The nurses get distressed and dissatisfied, which will place a direct impact on the quality of care that the patients receive. In such a situation, nurses end up committing drug administration errors and therapeutic mistakes.

Professional needs

Most insurance associations are in demand of adequate supply of medical practitioners, and the process, they need to consider the experts’ needs, enthusiastic and physical wellbeing instead they will end up losing them through resigning. Stone et al., (2015) argues that insurance association needs to develop conducive arrangements that favor the health care providers that range from the desired health care instructions to the acknowledgment of the health care professionals. The ongoing professional development and support to the nurses help in improving their attitude and the way they approach their patients and co-workers. Besides, it allows the nurses to discover more of the leadership capabilities that propel them to take over the nursing administrative positions and other leadership position.

Secondly, health care organizations can support their nurses by allowing them to enroll in online courses that can help develop their profession (Stone et al., 2015). Supporting the nurses in acquiring what they need to enhance their progress in the nursing profession and the nursing practice will help in conveying ideal care to the patients. Through professional development and support, nurses can create a sense of satisfaction in the calling of an individual to the field of nursing.

Human service framework must work hand in hand to ensure that the situation under which the health care providers practices enhances their prosperity and satisfaction. Several health providers suffer from nosocomial infections acquired from the hospitals while taking care of the patients. I n the end, health providers get discouraged with the ill effect related to their workplace, making most of them to work out of the medical field. It is sporadic for other professionals in different fields to develop nosocomial infections; this makes students who would make it to the medical and nursing field to study for other professionals such as educations. This will further lead to a continuous shortage of nursing from one season to another.

Roles of nursing leaders and managers

Both nursing leaders and managers can approach the problem of nurses’ shortage scientifically through the combination of efforts. According to (Cziraki et al., 2018) the managers and leaders should work hand in hand to ensure motivation of the nurses; this will help in enhancing the commitment of the nurses to their profession. Several researchers and experts believe in employee motivation because it is increasing the rates of achieving organizational goals and objectives. Nurses work both day and night to ensure the safety and full recovery of the patients from their conditions. The initial step in which the leaders and managers should consider is to identify the cause of dissatisfaction among the nurses.

Besides, the managers and leaders should conduct interviews and performance appraisal to identify means of improving the performance and satisfaction of the employee. Nurses sacrifice most of their lives and time to ensure that patients receive the best of the care they deserve; therefore, nurses should be treated in a better way, such as being given allowances and motivated. The nurses should take an approach of bottom-up rather than the top-down approach in the leadership organization, such that the first level should start from the nurse (Cziraki et al., 2018). In such a way, the problems experienced in the real ground of practices will be easily identified, assessed, analyzed, and reported. The managers and leaders should involve the nurses in the formulation, implementation, and modification of policies concerning nursing services to help reduce resistance against the policies and regulations that are developed. The use of democracy in the nursing profession will help inn curbing with the problem of the nursing shortage.

In most situations, nurses have been taken to be the helping hands in hospitals and health facilities. Therefore, managers develop visions that do not involve nurses. The other health care professions, such as physicians are being considered the most compared to nurses. Managers and leaders should change this perception and begin to treat nurses as equal professionals in the health care team. Nurses’ leaders and managers should be able to identify the problems that the nurses that are going through before the nurses could speak about the issue.

Leadership styles

The most appropriate leadership style that would address the issue of the nursing shortage is the transformational leadership style. Using a transformational leadership style, the leaders will be able to communicate one on one with the staff members. This will help in solving problems that they come across before a nurse decides to resign from their nursing profession (Choi et al., 2016). Secondly, the style will give a chance to the leaders and the managers to work together with the staff members in taking care of the patients. In such a situation, the quality of care that the patient will be improved which art the end will reduce the hospitalization period, thus enhancing job satisfaction among the nurses. Besides, the nurses’ managers become more proactive when it comes to employees needs because they are in close contact with each other. In addition, the managers, leaders, and employee work as a team when making policies that affect their profession and in identifying means of handling their challenges.
