Resolving Evidence-Based Practice Issues in Healthcare

Over time, there has been a shift in healthcare service provision due to the incorporation of the evidence-based practice (EBP). EBP is an approach that integrates the best evidence from research to guide the nursing practice while improving patient outcomes at a cheaper cost (Melnyk and Fineout, 2016). Despite the fact that evidence-based practice leads to a greater professional and patient satisfaction, it is faced with several challenges. One of the challenges facing the EBP in my organization is the organizational culture. The culture has hindered provision of services like palliative care to the patients thus reducing the quality of care in the hospital. With the incorporation of proper methods to address the challenge, an evidence-based practice can be promoted in the organization.

The incorporation of evidence-based practice into an organization requires effort from the management, other departments and the nurses providing care to the patients. In the organization exists a constraining power of the phrase “this is the way it is done here” making it difficult to accept change.  The first step towards solving the problem in the organization is education. The leaders spearheading the incorporation of EBP forget that most nurses have worked for many years using the old practice. People educated twenty years ago didn’t learn the evidence-based approach to care. Education will help promote behavior change, encourage collaborative care thus improving service delivery to the patients.
