I have to create a document that the joint commission is requiring. The document must include best outcomes for ECT. The document must show the problem as not having a competency based orientation for nursing staff and showing the importance of creating one. It must show the aspect of safety for patients as well as importance of best outcomes for patients.

It must show the significance of what best practices are through review of literature. This document will be the introduction to my nursing capstone project.
Must answer the question: importance of having a competency based orientation for nurses for ect showing also evidence based practice. answer what is the purpose of having a competency based orientation for ect?

Electroconvulsive therapy

Problem statement

ECT is the most effective that Is used to relieve psychotic symptoms in patients who are depressed, schizophrenic, manic, and suicidal. Patients’ needs skilled and knowledgeable personnel to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment using ECT. According to Modi, Gupta & Singh (2015), the safety and quality of care that the patients receive depends on the competency-based orientation that nurses receive. The role of an ECT nurse is to provide support, guidance, and expertise relating to all aspects of patient care within the ECT services. The challenges that the patients in need of ECT care are the lack of competency-based orientation for the nursing staff. The nurses find it hard to offer the nursing services because there is a limited orientation to the tasks awaiting the administration of ECT treatment.


ECT is a technical procedure that requires teamwork from the recovery nurses, anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, and a psychiatrist. The nursing education and competency-based orientation in offering ECT nursing care have been rarely addressed in mental care. According to Barton, Bruce & Schreiber (2018), effective training and orientation of nurses enhance the administration of safe and high-quality ECT care to the patients. Patients who undergo ECT have reported several cases of the stigma that have hindered them from consenting for the same treatment even when it is highly needed for the reduction of their mental health symptoms. The primary cause of increased incidence of stigma and refusal to consent for electroconvulsive therapy is because of a lack of competency oriented based care among the ECT nurses. Adequate competency-based orientation enhances the patient outcome because it increases the standard of practice and clinical effectiveness for the patients who are going through electroconvulsive therapy.

Improved and compliances with the treatment can be highly increased through patient attention together with their families. Patients desire to be mentally and physically supported to avoid multimorbidities that are related to their disease (Schaar, Titzer & Beckham, 2015). The nurses play a critical role in the care of patients because they form a significant part of the health care system. Therefore, competency-based orientation among the nurses who are taking care of patients undergoing ECT is substantial in enhancing better patient outcomes.  Besides, competency-based orientation helps in improving patient care, increases the confidence of the new nurses, and decreases the cost of care for the patients. The program is effective in ensuring that the nurses in the ECT care work closely in the interdisciplinary team without fear of being viewed as incompetent, thus reducing the occurrence of bullying and nursing turnover among the nurses.

The creation and development of a competency-based orientation program are critical in enhancing the confidence of the new nurses in conducting the delivery of effective, high-quality, and safe electroconvulsive therapy. The program can as well be created but not implemented, which hinders its effectiveness in the delivery of health care services. Therefore, the program is as good as its creation and implementation (Modi, Gupta & Singh, 2015). It is essential for the management, preceptors, mentors, and the orienteers to be aware and knowledgeable concerning all the detailed information of the program. All the preceptors should be trained and be willing to handle the new nurses with great care to ensure ease passage of knowledge and skills necessary for coping with the new roles and responsibilities.
