Sampling theory can be defined as the comparison of the population and the sample of
the population from the same population (Peregrine., 2019). The main problem here, therefore, is
the problems existing between the population and the parameter. The methodology of dealing
with this theory starts with the statistical induction where inferences are sought, the deductive
argument follows, and investigations of the samples drawn applying the laws of probability. The
sampling theory is only applicable to random samples. The key concepts of this theory are the
population, target population, eligibility, sampling criteria, and sampling methods (Peregrine.,
2019).
The main objectives for the sampling theory are; for statistical estimation where they can
help in estimating the unknown population parameters. Also, it can be used in testing hypotheses
where it is useful in making decisions on whether to reject or accept the hypothesis. It determines
whether the observed differences are by chance or are significant. Sampling theory also helps in
statistical inference and is making a conclusive general claim about a population or universe
drawing evidence from the studies of the samples used for the study. The sampling methods are
needed to obtain the sample of different groups, and it can use the probability or the non-
probability methods.
The generalizability in qualitative research is the study of phenomenon or issues affecting
a specific population or ethnic groups in a particular context (Leung., 2015). Therefore, it is not
an expected attribute. In simple terms, it can be referred to as used in making predictions based
on past experiences. It is used in nursing in two aspects; generalizing a population where they
apply the results of the sample group on the broader population and also in generalizing theories
because its deals more of the scientific theories rather than observations.
