The major goal of a leader is to lead. This is especially with servant leadership. A servant
leader usually is compelled to share power. This kind of leader prioritizes the employees or
individuals under his/her leadership. Servant leadership is interested in helping other individuals
to develop, perform and achieve as high as possible (Winston, & Fields, 2015). In healthcare,
servant leadership focuses on customer care, ensuring service is delivered at best. The major
interest of servant leaders is to serve others or even influence others to serve.

Servant leadership is contrasted with exercising real, godly leadership. Servant leaders
are known to influence, equip and empower people to accomplish a task. This is likened to the
way Jesus came to influence, encourage and empower individuals to grow in the will of God
according to his plan and purpose. Meaning being a leader either in church or any other setting, a
servant leader serves in the interest of other people. Servant leaders usually earn respect and
honor because of their caring attitude.

How a nurse leader influences the work environment. How influence protects and

values others in the work environment.

A positive relationship exists between a leader and a positive and healthy working
environment (Northouse, 2018). Working environment influences the staff satisfaction, staff
retention, performance of the staff and the organization as a whole as well as the patient outcome
and satisfaction. Development and establishment of a positive and strong healthy working
environment in various levels of care in the healthcare sector require a dedicated nursing
leadership. This is especially at the level of care where most work is delivered and the patient is

cared for. This makes nursing leadership be challenging especially in skills and ability to
influence the rest of the team members ensuring the patients receive safe and quality care.

The nurse leader at the place of work works towards ensuring a caring environment is
created for both the care providers and the customers. He handles conflicts at best majorly
focusing on unity and peace. As the head, he ensures that every sector is running smoothly. He
achieves this mainly through ensuring effective communication both vertically and horizontally.
He tries to ensure that the environment is supported at various levels. Teamwork and
collaboration in the provision of care is his major concern. He believes in developing individuals
as a way of developing the team as a whole, as well as the organization and service delivery to
the patients. Therefore, he strives to ensure each individual is assigned their area of interest, has
the opportunity to exploit their potential through making the time and resources needed
available. He leads by example and works for the interest of other people and not his own.
Through this, he has made the working environment to be one that nurtures individuals to do
their best while ensuring unity, teamwork, and collaboration with the rest of the team.

An aspect of influence is essential as far as leadership is concerned. A small portion of
leadership entails exercising control and authority over other individuals. According to
Northouse, (2018), a better part of being a leader entails influencing the people in the
surrounding. It is through the influence that one as a leader can be able to value and even protect
others in the place of work. Influence involves guiding others towards achieving certain
objectives which is mainly the work of the leader. In the process of guiding, others are able to
realize their goals either as individuals or as a group. In terms of protection, leadership traits such

Ways my own leadership could promote a feeling of protection and honor in the work

environment.

As a nurse leader, my leadership style that will support the feeling of protection and
honor will be governed by adherence to the rules, regulations, and policies that support safe
practices. This will be of benefit to both the care providers and the care receivers. To the care
providers, I will ensure they work in a supportive environment, well equipped, with a reasonable
workload. I will modify the working conditions to ensure they support it is one that nurtures their
potential enabling them to develop as individuals even as they strive to attain the group
objectives as described by the organization, department or unit they work in.

A work environment can protect and value the people being led through making the
belief of fairness and equity the foundation (Coetzer, Bussin, & Geldenhuys, 2017). Therefore, in
my leadership, I will ensure individuals are treated fairly the way they deserve, everyone earning
what they have worked as well awarding each according to their performance. This will
encourage individuals to produce the best in their various assigned area. Everyone will be given
an equal chance to develop self through having a chance to improve their knowledge and skills in
the areas of interest, especially in leadership and research. In terms of leadership, I will major in
the delegation of duties as a way to give them the opportunity to exercise their abilities and even
implement their ideas.

Reflection on at least two things learned from the \"Issue of Headship\" video

From the video, it is evident that headship and leadership are two closely related but are
different. While headship concerns highly ranked, positioned in the hierarchy leadership majorly
entails having influence and not being in authority. Being a leader is more of a calling. It is
having a strong urge to lead a particular kind of life which in turn influences other people who
are moved or convinced to follow the same line. Competency in both leadership and headship
comes in the process of executing duties. In headship one becomes more effective on using
powers and authority bestowed upon them as a result of their position while in leadership one
understands better the way of influencing different individuals ensuring they move together
towards achieving a common goal.

Competence matters most in leadership (Jennings et al., 2017). As competence comes
with experience, one learns to manage various individuals in different areas based on past
experiences. Therefore, now that leadership has some aspect of learning means leaders are not
exempt from making mistakes. It is through these mistakes that they learn to make better choices
and decisions when faced with similar conditions the next time. Therefore, leaders have to be
brave enough to take first and new steps. They need a heart of taking risks and testing new
waters when called to.

Conclusion.

Healthcare environments entail issues and concerns that influence people’s quality of life.
Therefore, it calls for strong leadership in order to be successful. Nurse as servant leaders ought
to serve at the interest of those the lead. They need to develop and mentor others in developing
the leadership skills needed in healthcare working environments. This trait involves those that
support quality and safe care while ensuring the satisfaction of the care receivers.
