Of the essence to cultural and linguistic competence is the need for self-assessment on the individual or organizational capacity to achieve this level of competency. In essence, this discussion focuses on reflecting on the personal level of cultural and linguistic competency for the establishment of self-preparedness to address the needs of the diverse communities. Moreover, it also seeks to determine strategies for improving the personal level of cultural and linguistic competency.

Going by the personal level of cultural and linguistic competency, it is beyond doubt that I am slightly prepared to address the needs of diverse communities. That is for sure because central to the personal level of cultural and linguistic competency is the innate ability to factor into my dealings with other people that own cultural preferences do not take precedence of the other parties. Besides, other than having a good command of the English dialect, I am only able to communicate with much ease to Asian-Americans, which is a small section of persons with other cultural backgrounds. Despite these capabilities, I am still short of confidence to address the needs of a diverse community.

Concerning my action plan of improving the level of cultural and linguistic competency, there are several strategies that I intend to develop. A case in point of such a strategy is embracing the diversity and cultural context by enrolling different language classes to enhance proficiency in the different languages present in the society. Another approach entails accepting that diversity in cultures and thereby utilizing translation services whenever not comfortable to serve persons of the various cultural backgrounds. With such strategies, it is beyond question that the personal level of cultural and linguistic competency will improve.

In conclusion, this discussion aimed at reflecting on the personal level of cultural and linguistic competency for the establishment of self-preparedness to address the needs of the diverse communities. It also sought to determine ways of improving the level of cultural and linguistic competency. Indeed, the analysis has managed to address these issues in great depth. An implication drawn from the review for nursing practice is the invaluable role of self-assessment in the development of cultural and linguistic competence. As such, going into the future, such recognition is of the essence if one is to become culturally and linguistic competent.
