Integration of theory and practice is one of the fundamental aspects of nursing as a science and a profession. By giving nurses the knowledge and abilities to make decisions, nursing education helps to equip nurses to deal with patients in the hospital context.

Learning in a clinical setting differs significantly from classroom learning, and nurses must acquire certain competencies. It is necessary to have clinical experience in a skills lab, clinical rotations, skills labs, or professional practice. Through leadership, the provision of quality and safety, the incorporation of evidence-based practice, and evaluation for community and population health, the nurse manages patients using the acquired skills.

Quality and Safety: Providing patients with high-quality, secure treatment is every organization’s top responsibility, and nurses always have an impact on this. By analyzing system effectiveness and individual performance while continuously monitoring the quality of care in terms of cost, structure, process, and results, it refers to the delivery of care that reduces the risk of harm to patients, families, communities, and providers (Western Governors University, 2019). From the classroom to the clinic, nurses get quality and safe care training.

One of the scenarios carried out during training was a display of high-quality nursing team care. Healthcare professionals who practice team nursing treat patients as interdisciplinary teams rather than as lone practitioners. The multidisciplinary approach guarantees professional responsibility, better patient satisfaction, and increased workplace involvement. By raising the staffing ratio during the clinical rotations, quality and safety were observed, which improved patient outcomes. A nurse who is responsible for too many patients runs the danger of making medical mistakes, and the burnout brought on by the increased workload results in the provision of subpar care. Professionally, I have been successful in raising quality by contributing to research and suggesting best practices for better care. As it provides data on illness trends and treatment outcomes, health research is crucial for enhancing the quality of care. Research also offers tested solutions that, when used correctly, can improve patient outcomes.

Nursing E-Portfolio Discussion Evidence-based Practice: Incorporating evidence-based practices appears to be the best way to increase the quality of patient care in today’s complicated healthcare system. In order to provide the best care possible, it includes integrating the most recent research findings with clinical knowledge, patient preferences, and family values (Western Governors University, 2019). Before engaging in real-world situations, nursing students learn how to employ evidence-based practice in the skills lab. One of the best EBP techniques I learned as a student was the usage of manikins. They are utilized to give pupils the abilities to deal with patients in the actual world. Being a member of the clinical team that executed the application of the WHO guidelines to prevent CLABSI in the ICU was great. To reduce CLABSI in hospital ICU departments, evidence-based practice has been demonstrated professionally by adopting a multidisciplinary team approach. The ICU nurses, infection control and prevention team, ICU anesthesiologist, and attending physician made up the multidisciplinary team. This team made sure that all medical personnel in the division followed the CLABSI control WHO criteria that had already been put in place.

Nursing E-Portfolio Discussion Leadership: Advanced nursing practice prepares MSNs for managerial positions in the challenging and continuously changing healthcare industry. Leadership in nursing is achieved via training and experience, just like any other area of the profession. Nursing students can develop their leadership abilities in the skills lab by managing groups and ensuring that every participant contributes completely. I have multiple times served as a team leader in the clinical area, mobilizing the team, assigning tasks, and creating nursing reports. As a nurse with a master’s degree, I exercise leadership by giving advice to less experienced nurses and making important choices regarding patient care. Leadership involves not only making decisions while seated at the top of the organization, but also getting down on the ground and working with personnel to put those decisions into action. Leaders lead by example, and followers always mimic what they see their leaders doing. Guidance has been shown to be effective when performing procedures on patients, caring for patients of all ages in the wards, and advancing one’s career in the field of research.

Community and Population Health Nursing E-Portfolio Discussion: Nurses practice by giving hospital-level care and assessing the needs of the local population through community health assessments. Population health is the state of health of a group of people that are either the same age, live in the same area, or have the same diagnosis. On the other side, community health is more inclusive and addresses the socioeconomic determinants of health. Making policies and raising awareness are also included in the scope of community health. I participated in the delivery of teen pregnancy health education at the skills lab. The goal of the health education was to boost confidence while dealing with huge groups and serve as a prelude to dealing with young people in healthcare settings. The topics covered included promoting long-acting reversible contraception for teenagers and discouraging youngsters from having sex. I was a member of the clinical team that offered community outreach services. Breast cancer awareness campaigns, field trips for cervical cancer screening, and visits to orphanages around the world are among the outreach projects in which I took part. Additionally, I took part in a community-wide assessment of obesity and its risk factors. We were able to compile data on the disease, find local treatment alternatives, and distribute posters to raise awareness of the condition among community members during the community diagnosis process.

Nursing E-Portfolio Discussion Part B: Theories and Approaches

Dorothea Orem, B1

The self-care deficit theory of nursing was developed by Dorothea Orem, one of the nursing theorists. Orem, who worked to raise the standard of nursing care in hospitals, saw that there was no scientific foundation for nursing. She was interested in learning why nursing was required and what the motivations were for its delivery. She explores the concepts of self-care, self-care deficiency, and nursing system theory in her theory. According to Orem, nursing is required when a person is incapable of providing continuous, effective self-care or is constrained in doing so (Smith and parker, 2015). As a result, the goal of nursing is to support patients in meeting their requirements. According to the notion of nursing systems, the nurse can help the patient achieve their basic needs by using the fully compensatory, partially compensatory, and supportive-educative systems.

My perspectives on nursing practice are influenced by Orem in the areas of leadership, community and population health, quality and safety, and evidence-based practice. The provision of services aimed at enhancing the patient’s wellbeing is quality nursing care. Every nursing action in Orem is centered on the patient. Another area that Orem’s theory can have an impact on is leadership. In addition to other patient needs, the nurse leader must see to it that self-care needs are satisfied (Smith and parker, 2015). Aspects of community and population health also deal with basic human needs including access to water, food, and shelter. According to Orem, when patients cannot receive these universal requirements, nursing is necessary. Similar to individuals, the community has needs like those for food, water, access to healthcare, housing, and safety. Orem’s idea provides evidence in favor of using EBP to manage patients. As seen, adopting Orem’s theory to manage patients include assessment, creation of a nursing diagnosis, implementation, and evaluation. EBP should be used at the implementation phase, and practice should be influenced by logic.

Nursing E-Portfolio Discussion B2: Self-Awareness and Self-Care Techniques Quality and Safety: Among the reasons I developed my nursing profession was to increase my knowledge and abilities in order to give patients high-quality, secure treatment. I think the best way to increase self-awareness and self-care in nursing practice is through education. Through education, the nurse can spot areas that need to be improved and develop solutions for the issues they find. Evidence-Based Practice: Evidence-based practice is a technique to keep nurses’ knowledge current, improve clinical judgment, and supplement the current provider-client decision-making process. It is gaining traction within the healthcare system (Rasheed, Younas and Sundus, 2019). I can guarantee I have enough knowledge about evidence-based techniques in current practice by staying up to date by attending forums, CMEs, and conferences. Leadership: Nursing leadership is actively participating in the clinical setting while also persuading others to enhance the standard of care. Today, collaborative decision-making and employee involvement define strong nursing leadership, replacing the lengthy days of sitting in an office and making important decisions for workers. Increased self-awareness and self-care can be achieved by doing a leadership self-evaluation (Rasheed, Youndas and Sundus, 2019). Self-evaluation entails identifying areas for improvement, examining the best elements of leadership, and pinpointing those areas. Community and Population Health: A multidisciplinary strategy is necessary to address community and population health. A community is too big to manage on one’s alone, so for a nurse to raise awareness of it, teamwork and collaboration are crucial tactics. Along with planning for outreach and the delivery of community health services, I want to work with other teams to undertake community health assessments.
