Legislative Letter

March 31st, 2018

(address)

Dear senator ……

My name is …………….  I am a resident of ……………., and I will be a new Registered Nurse in September 2018. I am writing to request your development of legislation that will ensure the safety of patients while receiving care from nurses in the new era of using electronic health records of keeping patient data. The bill would be in line with the American Recovery and Reinforcement Act of 2009 which advocates for the implementation of Electronic Health Records in hospitals.Legislative Letter As the care providers, primarily nurses, rely on technology to provide effective and efficient care, there should be policies, both at the state and hospital level, that govern responsible usage of the health IT system. This is major to ensure patients’ safety is upheld by ensuring confidentiality and privacy of the patient information and protection from adverse effects as a result of an electronic error or even breakdown.

The legislation will focus on three major aspects that will ensure patient safety while nurses use the electronic system of health records. First, patient information will be accessed and handled by authorized individuals only. Secondly, the transfer of patient information to another department or facility will be monitored to ensure only authorized personnel to receive it, lastly, there shall be proper training to equip both the currently practicing and training nurse practitioners on how to effectively use the electronic system to avoid clinical errors and adverse effects to the patients.

Introduction and implementation of this legislation will enable the healthcare sector to achieve its aim of incorporating technology into its system. The main aim is to improve patient outcome by reducing medical errors, ensuring patient safety and satisfaction through effective and efficient care.

This achievement will reduce the funds directed each year towards the treatment of adverse effects caused by medical errors. General health among populations in healthcare facilities and the state at large will improve.

Respectfully yours,

Name
