The article is a qualitative study that uses qualitative data to set its goal, which is to look at the “association between alleles of FTO known to increase obesity risk and measures of habitual appetitive behavior.” (Wardle et al., 2008). This goal can be reached with the help of qualitative data in this study, since appetite is not something that can be seen or counted but can be measured on a scale. By using the right tools to collect data, the researchers were able to apply this idea in a full and correct way during the study. The Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire was used to make the Satiety Responsiveness Scale and the Enjoyment of Food Scale.

Methods for choosing samples

Purposive sampling was used to find people to take part in this project. The people who took part in the study were chosen on purpose from the Twins Early Development Study (TEDS), where the physical traits that were needed for the study had already been set. (Wardle et al., 2008). The height, weight, and waist size of the children, which were measured by their parents, were taken into account. (Wardle et al., 2008). In a smaller group, the researchers checked the data again. The researcher can get a good idea of the whole group by using a sampling method that is not random. This sampling method is good for this study because it is an exploratory study that wants to find the “association between alleles of FTO known to increase the risk of obesity and measures of habitual appetitive behavior.” (Wardle et al., 2008). The method was used in the whole study because it was the only way that every person who took part in the study could join.

Whether something is true or not

Several things have been put in place to make the study more true and reliable. In terms of validity, the researchers chose the group with the most appropriate characteristics. 3337 children between the ages of 8 and 11 were chosen as a group. (Wardle et al., 2008). The study subjects all had one thing in common: they were obese. The International Obesity Task Force’s definition of obesity or being overweight was used to figure out what this meant. (Wardle et al., 2008). Even though this feature makes the study more accurate, it also makes it less reliable. By not randomly picking a sample with the desired traits, the researchers take a subjective approach to the study, which increases bias and decreases reliability.

Using reliable scales to measure the qualitative data has also made a big difference in how true the study is. The Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire gave the researchers the Satiety Responsiveness Scale and the Enjoyment of Food Scale, which they used to test their ideas. (Wardle et al., 2008). Also, the people who were taking part in the study and filling out the surveys were not forced in any way to fill them out. This makes the study more reliable because the experts didn’t change the answers in any way, so there isn’t much bias.

Hypotheses

The study’s main idea was that “children with higher-risk FTO alleles have a different appetite in the sample population,” which was made up of 3337 children who were not related to each other and were between the ages of 8 and 11. (Wardle et al., 2008). The goal of the study was to test this theory by using the right research methods to find out how much statistical evidence supports the theory. Previous information showed that being overweight is strongly linked to this study group. The parents validated and filled out a psychometric measure to test the child’s appetite, which was another thing that helped test the theory. The researchers used all of these measures and did so in the right way when they set the goal. In the end, the results showed that “the A allele was linked to increased adiposity in this cohort and in an independent case-control replication study of children of the same age in the United Kingdom.” (Wardle et al., 2008).

Using data research to choose

ANOVA was used to look at the data, and it showed that AA homozygotes had a P value of 0.008 and much lower Satiety Responsiveness scores. The researchers used the mediation analysis method to find that “the effects of Satiety Responsiveness as the association of the AA genotype with increased adiposity” (Wardle et al., 2008).In qualitative studies, the two methods are used to look at qualitative material. In this study, the methods were used to look at the answers from the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaires that the parents of the study subjects filled out. (Wardle et al., 2008). In this study, these methods were used in the right way and in full to reach the goal of the research.

Analysis of power

There is no part in the article about power analysis. But it’s important to note that the sample size has a big effect on the statistical strength of this study. The statistical power is bigger the more people are in the sample. In this case, the statistical strength of the study is increased by a sample size of 3337 children who were chosen for the study. (Wardle et al., 2008). The story doesn’t explain how power analysis is used, so it’s impossible to tell if it’s right or wrong.
