EVIDENCE-BASED PROJECT, PART 1: IDENTIFYING RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES

EVIDENCE-BASED PROJECT, PART 1: IDENTIFYING RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES

Before you start:

Check out the Resources and find a medical problem you’re interested in that can be the focus of your medical inquiry. Remember, the problem you pick will be the same throughout the course.
Using keywords related to your chosen medical problem, search at least four different databases in the Walden Library to find at least four relevant articles written by experts that are related to your problem. Make sure they are original research articles, not systematic reviews.
Look over the findings of your research and think about how it felt to search through an unfiltered database for expert research.
Think about the different types of research methods used in the four articles you found.

Step 1: Figuring Out Research Methods

After reading each of the four expert articles you picked, use the Matrix Worksheet template to examine the methods used in each one. Here’s what your analysis should include:

The complete citation of each expert article in APA format.
A short paragraph explaining why you picked this expert article and/or how it’s connected to your medical problem, including a quick overview of the ethical side of research on your problem.
A brief description of what each expert article aimed to find out.
A brief explanation of the research method used in each article. Make sure to say if they used qualitative, quantitative, or a mix of both methods. Be specific.
A short description of the strengths of each research method used, including how reliable and valid the method was in each of the articles you picked.

Part 1 of the Module 2 Assessment, Evidence-Based Project, Part 1: Identifying Research Methodologies

Introduction

Finding good sources to support the best nursing practices is important for nurses. Evidence-based practice helps make nursing care safer and improves patient outcomes. For this assignment, we’re focusing on preventing pressure ulcers. We created a PICOT question to find journal articles about it.

PICOT: Among patients who are bedridden in the hospital (P), does frequently changing their position, using lotion, and using pressure-relieving support surfaces (I) compared to the usual care (C) lead to better prevention of pressure sores (O) within six months (T)?

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry. Keep in mind that the clinical issue you identify for your research will stay the same for the entire course.
  • Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical issue of interest, search at least four different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles related to your clinical issue of interest. You should not be using systematic reviews for this assignment, select original research articles.
  • Review the results of your peer-reviewed research and reflect on the process of using an unfiltered database to search for peer-reviewed research.
  • Reflect on the types of research methodologies contained in the four relevant peer-reviewed articles you selected.

Part 1: Identifying Research Methodologies

After reading each of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected, use the Matrix Worksheet template to analyze the methodologies applied in each of the four peer-reviewed articles. Your analysis should include the following:

  • The full citation of each peer-reviewed article in APA format.
  • A brief (1-paragraph) statement explaining why you chose this peer-reviewed article and/or how it relates to your clinical issue of interest, including a brief explanation of the ethics of research related to your clinical issue of interest.
  • A brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the aims of the research of each peer-reviewed article.
  • A brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the research methodology used. Be sure to identify if the methodology used was qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed-methods approach. Be specific.
  • A brief (1- to 2-paragraph) description of the strengths of each of the research methodologies used, including reliability and validity of how the methodology was applied in each of the peer-reviewed articles you selected.

 Introduction

Finding resources to support best practices is vital for skill for nurses. Evidence-based practice helps to promote the safe nursing practice and improve patient outcomes. The clinical area of interest chosen for this assignment is the prevention of pressure ulcers. A PICOT question was formed to locate journal articles related to the subject.

PICOT: Among hospitalized bedridden patients (P), does the application of frequent repositioning, lotion, and use of pressure-relieving support surfaces (I) in comparison with current common practice (C) result in better prevention of pressure sores (O) within a period of six months (T)?

Why you chose this article and/or how it relates to the clinical issue of interest (include a brief explanation of the ethics of research related to your clinical issue of interest) I selected this piece because it explores the nurse’s involvement in pressure ulcer avoidance. No patient is allowed to get pressure injuries for the sake of research, which is how studies on this subject are ethical. The study results on the effectiveness of organic aloe vera in reducing pressure injuries are presented in the paper I chose.

According to study ethics, patients in the control group will not be purposefully subjected to pressure ulcer risk.

I picked this article because it discusses how to avoid pressure sores. Similar to other trials, it is against ethical considerations for patients to purposefully get bed sores while being studied. I selected this piece because it examines ways to relieve pressure in order to avoid bed sores. In this field, research ethics involves looking into strategies that will not do subjects any damage.
Brief description of the aims of the research of each peer-reviewed article To determine nurses’ understanding of educational strategies for treating pressure ulcers. To find out how aloe vera affects orthopedic hospital patients’ ability to avoid pressure injuries. To spread knowledge regarding pressure injury prophylaxis. To evaluate the clinical and financial merits of two different bed covering options.
Brief description of the research methodology used Be sure to identify if the methodology used was qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed-methods approach. Be specific. It is a quantitative study with an experimental plan (Hoe & Hoare, 2012).

This is a RCT (randomized controlled trial), that is usually quantitative in nature (Hoe & Hoare, 2012).

This is a qualitative professional opinion. A quantitative RCT this is (Hoe & Hoare, 2012).

A brief description of the strengths of each of the research methodologies used, including reliability and validity of how the methodology was applied in each of the peer-reviewed articles you selected. The ability to alter the independent variable is this methodology’s strongest point. The random assignment of individuals to research and experimental and control groups ensures validity and dependability (Hoe & Hoare, 2013). The ability to manipulate the independent variable to examine results in the dependent variable is strength. This promotes dependability and validity (Hoe & Hoare, 2013). This methodology’s strength comes from the author’s knowledge and experience. Its lack of strong supporting evidence is a problem. Due to the information’s subjective character, reliability and validity are quite poor. The ability to control the independent variable and the high sample size are the strengths. Both contribute to the results’ increased generalizability and validity.
General Notes/Comments This research is relevant to the selected clinical subject matter of interest. This research is relevant to the selected clinical topic of interest. This research is relevant to the selected clinical area of interest and adds to evidence-based practice knowledge available. The clinical issue of interest selected is relevant to this investigation.
