Evidence-based nursing practice
Introduction
Evidence-based nursing (EBN) practice is a problem-solving strategy to healthcare provision which associates the best evidence from comprehensive designed research involving patient assessment, patient preferences, and clinicians’ expertise. It is geared towards attaining better and safe patient outcomes together with lowering healthcare costs.

Two barriers to EBN
- Resistance to change
It is very difficult to initiate changes in a routine based practice. In the nursing practice, a shift to new healthcare providing interventions has been proved to have resistance from within.
- Lack of time

Ways to address the barriers
Provision of access to relevant information could influence change. This includes access to the internet, library sources and workshop training that could initiate the development of EBN as a routine practice. More mentors should be incorporated to work besides nurses to help them learn and apply EBN regularly. Also, the nursing management should employ more nurses to increase the nurse-patient ratio. This could reduce the workload on a single nurse and allow for enough time to practice EBN (Brownson, Deshpande, & Gillespie, 2017).
Conclusion
Addressing the major barriers to EBN in nursing could see the goal realized by 2020 through step by step improvements in healthcare provision.
