Critiquing a Research

Critiquing a Research

The process of critiquing a research depends on whether it is quantitative or qualitative in nature. Thus, this discussion seeks to illustrate how one can critique both types of research. Consequently, this will inspire new insights about the procedure.

Quantitative Article Critique

Title

The title of this study is appropriate as it has the right length that is informative of what the study intends to carry out. Moreover, it clearly accounts for the study variables, which in this case they include the caregiver burden and symptom distress in end of life patients. The two have a relationship and thus a much firmer reason that the title is relevant.

Abstract

Since the purpose of the abstract is to provide a detailed summary of the article contents, there is no doubt that this is evident in this article. It is informative as it captures all the basic ideas with the required word count and absence of omissions. All the main aspects of the study like the purpose, justification, accomplishment, findings, and conclusions are evident in this section. Thus, this shows the accuracy and the appropriateness of this research component.

Introduction

The preparatory phase is also spot on as it clearly develops the background of the research to enable the reader to understand the research question even better. Furthermore, its research question is equally researchable as there is evidence from past studies that there have been attempts to comprehend the issues surrounding the study variables.

Statement of the Problem

The problem statement of this study is apparent and has a significant magnitude that is worthy the address from this study. Such is the case given the rising numbers of cancer patients presenting with symptom distress in the home setting. Therefore, this problem is of the essence in nursing since it has an obvious benefit regarding contributing to its body of knowledge.

Hypotheses/ Research Questions

For the purpose of this research article, the researcher has not directly stated the research questions or hypothesis nor has she justified their exclusion. However, one can clearly state these components because the study variables and population are apparent from the word go. Lastly, the formulated research questions and hypotheses are consistent with the literature review done.

Literature Review

The literature analyzed does not keep with the standard of currency since it fails to note recently done studies that address this challenge. However, the researcher has an eye on the surrounding issues of this subject and indicates the current gap that exists concerning this phenomenon.

Conceptual/ Theoretical Framework

The theoretical framework is present and is spot on about the central concepts that the study desires to handle. The rationale is also manifest and gives no room for questioning the ultimate goal of this research.

Qualitative Article Critique

Title

The title is not well framed as it fails to recognize all the primary research variables. Moreover, it does not provide much information on the vitality of the study because it fails to capture the full scope of the research purpose.

Abstract

The study has no abstract in its layout and thus it goes off-track on this research requirement.

Introduction

Of significance to the introduction is the absence of a brief background of the study intended purpose. Nevertheless, it is apparent that the researcher aims to establish the relationship between the attitudes of both nurses as well as patients and the impact on the management of violence and aggression.

Statement of the Problem

The problem statement is not clear as the researcher fails to build up a case of how this aspect is a challenge that requires immediate attention. Despite the sensitivity of this issue, the depiction of the problem statement does not demonstrate its significance to the nursing profession.

Research Questions

Of significance to this study are the lack of the research questions and the absence of a justification of the same. However, the purpose and variables of this are easily identifiable and therefore one can easily imply the research question from the same.

Literature Review

The literature explored in this study is not broad enough to guarantee this subject a scrutiny. Moreover, it fails to recognize the gaps in the studies done in the past. However, it is credible given the currency of the articles reviewed.

Conceptual Underpinnings

The study has a notable absence of the major concepts that the research centers itself.
