What is obesity?
This is unhealthy accumulation of body fats which affects the normal functioning of a person and causes a number of health problems. The body is determined to have excess fats due to intake of huge amounts of calories which is more that the energy usage in the body.
Major causes of Obesity
Obesity can result from a combination of the following:
– The genes that a person inherits from parents
– The ability and rate of the body to utilize energy
– Personal eating and exercising habits
-Personal lifestyle surroundings
-Psychological factors
Major health risks
Reduced Life Expectancy (Compared to people of normal weight, obese people have a 50% to 100% increased risk of dying prematurely)
Increased risk for suffering:
- Diabetes (type 2)
- Joint problems (e.g., arthritis)
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Gallbladder problems
- Problems with fertility and pregnancy
Preventing Obesity at a personal level
– Eating healthy diets free from excessive fats and sugars greatly helps to reduce the amount of fat that gets to the body
– Involving regular body activities helps to burn excessive fats in the body hence reducing the chances of becoming obese.
– Consult your health care provider on the best strategies that you can involve to keep safe from developing obesity.
– It is a personal responsibility to take good care of your body to make sure that you stay health at all times in respect to the type of food that you eat.
– It is the role of parents to introduce the children to suitable lifestyles that they can follow to keep them healthy at all times.
– It is good that you introduce the importance of body activities and workouts to your child as early as possible for them to develop a positive mentality when it comes to losing weight and keeping safe from obesity.
Fact you should know about obesity
It is determined that parents who had a moderate control on their children are more concerned about their weight and has a sense of proper dieting essential in managing body weight contrary to those who are very strict when relating with their children. This information is important for the nursing profession in that the nurses can arrange for training opportunities to explain the role of family dynamics in determining the body weight of a person. This will help the community members not to be victims of obesity due to the negative effects of the prevailing dynamics in their families.
Research has indicated that about 1/3 of the children population are obese. This is a problem that has raised an alarm in the nursing sector, and interventions are always being invited to help control this trend. This information indicates that parents have a role in determining whether a child becomes obsess or not. This influence is attached to the feeding habits that parents introduce and the amount of activities that parents introduce their children to. Parents are role models and children will always take after them.
