The increased number of people suffering from chronic and terminal illnesses in the world has given the need for palliative and hospice care services. The United States is no exception when it comes to palliative care because a large population suffers from chronic conditions like cancer and heart diseases. It is evident that the federal government spends approximately 86% of funds allocated to the health sector to manage chronic illnesses (Touhy an Jett, 2016). Due to the nature of the conditions, palliative and hospice care services are needed to improve the condition of patients while promoting a peaceful death. However, many patients do not seek palliative care services because of poor knowledge of the relevance of the services. Furthermore, it has been noticed that the healthcare providers fail to advise the elderly to seek palliative care because they lack enough skills in palliative care services. Through the interventions of teaching caregivers and informing patients on palliative care, the number of people seeking palliative care services will be increased.
