In the contemporary world, leadership and innovation are often essential for the accomplishment of the management functions (planning, organizing, leading and controlling). In essence, this discussion aims at shedding light on the various roles played by the two entities in the attainment of management functions. Moreover, it will highlight the challenges that individuals face when integrating leadership in the management functions.

Roles of Leadership and Innovation within the Management Functions

Primarily, leadership and innovation play several roles within each of the management functions (planning, organizing, leading and controlling) that are worth noting. Firstly, leadership and innovation are essential in planning. Such is the case given that managers rely on creativity, a product of innovative leadership for the establishment of the strategic plan of an organization (Marquis, & Huston, 2015). Clearly, without such leadership and innovation, planning is as well as non-existent.

Additionally, leadership and innovation are also crucial for the achievement of the organizing function. That is for sure because  leadership enables managers appreciate the need for involving the staff in organizational decision-making in both informal and formal organization designs like shared governance. Leadership also encourages the upward communication, which is of the essence for the success of any organization structure (Van Wart, &Suino, 2012).

As for the leading function, managers rely on leadership and innovation skills for the employment of the appropriate leadership style. According to Marquis, and Huston, (2015), an appropriate leadership style is necessary for the directing of the subordinates towards the attainment of the organization’s vision. As such, leadership is necessary for the attainment of this function.

Lastly, managers are also dependent on leadership and innovation in the achievement of controlling function of management. That is the case because leadership enables the individuals to communicate the expected organization’s standards and inspire them towards achieving them. Besides, through innovation, they can encourage subordinates to utilize for the achievement of set standards (Marquis, & Huston, 2015). By so doing, the controlling function, which entirely entails evaluating attainment of set standards, becomes a reality.

Challenges of Integrating Leadership in Management Functions

Precisely, the integration of leadership is not that easy since it comes with many challenges that are worth mention. A case in point of a predominant challenge is resistance, which is common when individuals come up with creative ideas for solving organizational problems. That is for sure because many persons are not open to the idea of doing things in a new way (Weiss, &Tappen, 2015). As such, this hinders the integration of innovative leadership in the management functions.

Conclusion

Concisely, this discussion focused on analyzing the various roles played by leadership and innovation in the attainment of management functions. Indeed, from the analysis, it is apparent that leadership and innovation are of utmost importance in the achievement of management functions. As such, going into the future, managers ought to rely on the two if they are to become productive.
