How to write an essay on the Importance of Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing

Introduction: We have three criteria an individual can take to be a registered nurse. One criteria is a three-year diploma program in nursing. Other criteria are associate degrees offered in community colleges, and the last criteria is a four-year degree offered by universities and colleges (Johnston, 2022). When individuals complete a baccalaureate degree program, they earn a bachelor of science in Nursing (BSN) (Johnston, 2022). This paper will be about the importance of completing my baccalaureate degree program in nursing.

Importance of baccalaureate degree in nursing

With my BSN degree, I will be able to conduct clinical research and deliver compassionate patient care, which will improve the quality of care and patient outcomes (University of St. Thomas, 2022). According to the University of St. Thomas (2022), “A 10% increase in the proportion of BSN-prepared nurses on hospital units was associated with lowering the odds of patient mortality by 10.9%”. Also, with better patient outcomes, I will have job security. More hospitals are hiring nurses with the BSN as a minimal requirement; the standards are set to uphold the recommendations set by The Future of Nursing in the 2011 study, which states 80% of nurses on staff should hold BSN (University of St. Thomas, 2022).

My BSN degree will put me in a better position for job options. Inside the hospital, I can work in different nursing specialties, for example, emergency room, intensive care unit, medical-surgical, pediatric, obstetric, etc. (University of St. Thomas, 2022). Additionally, apart from the nursing positions in the healthcare setting, a BSN degree offers more options: Nurse manager, travel nurse, public health nurse, legal nurse consultant, home health nurse, etc. (University of St. Thomas, 2022). Besides the career options, by BSN degree is the first step in pursuing an advanced nursing degree, such as a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN). With the MSN, I will be qualified for specialized nursing careers, i.e., nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, and nurse-midwife (University of St. Thomas, 2022).

With my BSN degree, I will be in a stable and steady income stream in my nursing career. Mostly, starting BSN salaries are similar to that of Associate’s Degree in Nursing (AND). Still, because of extensive education with the baccalaureate program, they can manage complex tasks and are afforded more autonomy than their parts. With this in consideration, research has shown that BSN degree holders are more likely to earn more over time than their associate’s degree-holding counterparts (University of St. Thomas, 2022). Furthermore, I will be more equipped and prepared to give superb nursing care with my BSN degree. The baccalaureate program has enabled me to be in touch with the advancement of the nursing field, the new technologies (telehealth), and new treatment methods that are important in serving patients better and improving healthcare in the community (University of St. Thomas, 2022).

Conclusion

With my BSN degree, I will conduct clinical research to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes. I will have job security and opportunities for career development (University of St. Thomas, 2022). Also, I will be in a pole position for job options either in hospital settings or outside the health care setting. Finally, I will be better positioned for a stable and steady income stream in my nursing career with the BSN degree.
