The LGBT community is an example of a marginalized and discriminated group worldwide. They are victimized by individuals who think their sexual orientation is superior to others. LGBT are normal humans with different sexual orientations or gender identity. Studies have shown LGBT have health disparities linked to social and cultural discrimination and biases (Morris et al. 2019). This has led to increased substance abuse, suicidal cases, and psychiatric disorders. The purpose of this paper is to describe factors that have hinder the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community from accessing health care services and the possible solution.

Factors Hindering LGTB From Utilization of Health Care Services

The psychological factor is one of the factors hindering LGTB from utilizing health care services. The LGTB communities are discriminated against on health insurance coverage unlike their heterosexual counterparts (Qureshi et al., 2018). Also, they experience a high rate of stress due to harassment which lowers their self-esteem leading to poor health-seeking behaviors.

Behavioral issues of society members and caregivers also affect the health-seeking behaviors of the LGTB community. The adverse reaction either from the parents or family members once their children come out as LGTB will lead to a feeling of rejection and shame; this may hinder them from seeking healthcare services.

The sociocultural factors directly impact the health-seeking behavior of the LGTB community. Mostly, LGTB communities are stigmatized and discriminated against by the general population. Their health needs are not addressed, and also there are no specialists who cater to their health needs (Qureshi et al., 2018). Furthermore, there are reports of discrimination while seeking care by LGTB due to their sexual orientation. All these have resulted in poor health-seeking behaviors by LGTB.

Workplace discrimination is a perfect example of an environmental factor affecting the health-seeking behavior of the LGTB group. Studies have shown LGTB face higher chances of discrimination from their bosses and employees (Qureshi et al., 2018). Their employees and bosses may deny them health insurance cover rights, which is unlikely with heterosexual partners, negatively affecting their health-seeking behavior.

The health system plays a significant role in utilizing health care services by the LGTB group. Most healthcare systems have not integrated the friendly centers for LGTB groups or professionals trained to meet the health needs of LGTB (Qureshi et al., 2018). With this, some LGTB groups will prefer not to seek care to avoid harassment and any discrimination that might occur.

Nursing Intervention in Promoting Health

Nurses are responsible for providing health without biases and discrimination. For this to be effective, they must have multidisciplinary knowledge of different age groups, economic and social cultural issues, sexual orientation and health policies, and how they influence health (Morris et al., 2019). Additionally, nurses should possess health promotion skills, for example, communication skills and the ability to support health behavior change of their patients or clients.

In promoting health, nurses are expected to be health ambassadors; they are expected to lead from the front by being the health role models and engaging in health-promoting activities, including care to all regardless of their sexual orientation (Kelly et al.,2017). Furthermore, Nurses should be competent in respect to the attitude of health consumers. This acts as the baseline information when providing and promoting health. Finally, nurses should be confident and flexible when promoting health, and most importantly, they must understand the health needs of their clients or patient.
