How to write a nursing Policy and Regulation Supporting Informatics and Technology Integration (Solved)

Alcohol And Drug Abuse Patient Confidentiality

The policy

  • The policy emphasizes the need and importance of health care providers to confidentially handle patients’ alcohol and drug abuse records (Lian et al., 2021).
  • The policy allows for extra privacy on alcohol and substance abuse programmes.
  • Patient information, any form of treatment and diagnosis are treated as confidential (Lian et al., 2021). Furthermore, patient impairment doesn’t warrant disclosure of patient’s information.

The impact of the policy on informatics

  • Health information Technology in health has led to development of electronic health records (EHR) to medical costs, improve evidenced based medical practice and reduce medical errors (Sharma et al., 2016).
  • The main element of EHRs is health information exchange (HIE), which is used for sharing patients’ information across departments in a hospital systems and other authorized bodies.
  • Implementation of EHRs and HIR has led to breaches of patients’ rights to privacy and confidentiality.
  • The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) address privacy and protect confidentiality of individually identifiable health information (IIHI).
  • The health workers should not disclose patients’ information regarding treatment and management of alcohol and substance abuse (McNeely et al., 2018).
  • The policy (HIPAA) permits slight necessary disclosure of information without patients consent for example payment for treatment and health care activities.
  • The patients can access their health records and request editing of information if they believe they are inaccurate.
  • The HIPPA has described penalties to violators of alcohol and drug abuse confidentiality policy.

Impact on outcomes

  • The policy will improve patients’ outcomes because they will be confident to health care providers in regard to disclosure of personal and sensitive information (Lian et al., 2021).
  • For the health workers it will provide scope of practice minimizing unnecessary ethical dilemmas in clinical settings

Procedure

  • The confidentiality policy makers are required to determine sensitive information on electronic health record, individuals with authority to information disclosure and the limits of disclosing information (Lian et al., 2021).
