Low-income families often lack access to quality education due to high tuition rates, lack of transportation, and other barriers, and difficulty accessing quality healthcare due to the high cost of insurance, medications, and care (Tacoli, 2020). Additionally, they often struggle to find safe, affordable housing in their community, leading to homelessness and other hardships. However, many low-income earning populations have difficulty accessing healthy, affordable food, leading to poor nutrition and chronic hunger.

Addressing the inequities encompassing the low-income earning populations requires several factors. Increasing school spending in low-income communities is vital to ease access to quality education, including access to after—school programs and providing resources to students to help curb education illiteracy. Improving access to health for low-income populations requires increased funding for community health centres, provision of access to affordable health insurance, improvement in access to mental health services and increased access to preventive care. Furthermore, to increase access to affordable housing, the creation of incentives for developers to build affordable housing, expansion of access to low-income housing vouchers and increasing access to housing counselling will vitally help improve the housing system for low-income earning populations.

One approach to addressing the challenges impacting low-income earning populations is to develop and implement comprehensive social policies that focus on creating economic opportunities and providing access to essential services. This could include raising the minimum wage to a living wage, providing high-quality public education, expanding access to affordable housing, increasing access to healthcare and providing targeted tax breaks for low-income households. Additionally, it is crucial to ensure that all people, regardless of income level, have access to quality job opportunities. This could include investing in job training programs and incentives for businesses to hire and retain employees from low-income households. Furthermore, it is essential to address the root causes of poverty and inequality, such as racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination, to create a more equitable society.

Advocates can use policies in various ways to enact change to the inequalities affecting low-income earning populations.
