Future of Nursing Report

Future of Nursing Report

The ‘future of nursing’ report was conducted with the aim of formulating structures that will help improve the quality of nursing services offered in the United States of America. The report was conducted by an ad hoc committee and they formulated a number of recommendations that are effective in the transformation of nursing. The assignment discusses the report of the committee and the recommendations. It also describes the importance of the report in nursing practice, education and workforce development (Pittman, Bass, Hargraves, Herrera & Thompson, 2015). The roles of state-based action coalitions are discussed in the assignment. Two initiatives that have been developed in Virginia state, how thy advance the profession, barriers, and solutions are discussed below.

Discuss the work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine research that led to the IOM report, “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.”

The Institute of Medicine together with the foundation of Robert Wood Johnson embarked on a mission of determining the future of the nursing profession. The committee conducted a comprehensive study whose goal was to establish a transformational result on the future of nursing. A committee was formed to assess the capacity of nurses working in different healthcare facilities and their ability to meet the increasing healthcare demands. The committee also has an objective of assessing the public health system and develop a report on the performance of nurses in these institutions. Delivery of nursing services in healthcare facilities that have a shortage in the supply of healthcare equipment was also assessed and findings established in the report that was formulated by the ad hoc committee (Swan, Ferguson, Chang, Larson &Smaldone, 2015). The education system of nurses was scrutinized in the report, an assessment was made to determine whether the education system produces competent and proficient nurses or the nurses produced by the education system are not able to provide care that is required. A clear action and blueprint for nursing practice were developed by the committee in its report. The committee was given a task of establishing national, state and local policies that are effective in the transformation of nursing practice.

A number of recommendations were drafted in a number of areas. Recommendations on the role of nurses in the context of the general workforce. The roles of nurses in times of shortage, in conformity with the societal expectations and the role of technology in the current and future nursing practice. Recommendations were also established on matters pertaining expansion of nursing faculty, capacity building in nursing schools and transformation of nursing education in order to ensure that adequate competent nurses are produced to meet the prevailing and future health needs. Recommendations were also formulated that help supports effective and innovative delivery of nursing care, and continuous professional training in order to improve the quality of care that is offered to patients and their families (Ross, Fitzpatrick, Click,Krouse&Clavelle, 2014). According to the findings of the report, the barriers to effective nursing practice are restrictive collaborative requirements in terms of independent practice, restrictions in prescribing, diagnosis and treatment. A number of recommendations were established. In the recommendations, the report suggested that nurses should practice in the full context of their training. The report recommended that nurses should achieve a higher level of academic excellence through an academic system that promotes academic progress. That nurse should collaborate with physicians and other healthcare practitioners in ensuring that there is an improvement in the healthcare system in the United States of America. In the report, it is stated that effective nursing planning and policy formulation should incorporate data collection and improvement of information structures.

Identify the importance of the IOM “Future of Nursing” report related to nursing practice, nursing education and nursing workforce development

The IOM ‘Future of Nursing’ report is important in nursing practice, education and development of the workforce. For instance, it recommends nurses to attain the highest level of education and training with an improvement in the education system. The report insists that training of nursing practitioners should ensure that there is the promotion of academic progression in the practice. In nursing practice, the report recommends that nurses should be able to practice in the full context of their training and that they should apply the skills that they learn in class with the aim of improving their level of nursing practice. The report also recommends that nurses are supposed to collaborate with physicians and other stakeholders in the United States of America’s healthcare system with an aim of transforming performance in the field of health. In workforce development, the report recommends that nurses should be involved in effective workforce planning and in policymaking. Data collection and information processing are supposed to be inculcated in the process of effective workforce planning and policy formulation in healthcare (Redman, Pressler, Furspan&Potempa, 2015).

What is the role of state-based action coalitions and how do they advance goals of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action?

The state-based action coalitions play an important role in campaigning for the formulated recommendations at state, regional and local levels in the United States of America.  15 Action coalitions have been formulated and their objective is to fulfil the recommendations of the ‘future of nursing’ report recommendations that aim to strengthen nursing leadership and improvement in the nursing workforce. Leaders from different states meet often to discuss imperative for change in their states with the aim of strengthening the quality of nursing management and the performance of nursing workforce. They act as advocates in the community level and they incorporate different stakeholders by having representatives from healthcare organization, representatives from the business sector, members of the education sector and the community at large with the aim of building healthy nurse-patient relationships that further cause improvement in the quality of healthcare services offered in the community. A number of states have supported the initiative of improving the access to nursing care. For instance, South Carolina and Maryland states passed laws that helped the citizens living in these states to increase access to nursing care.

Summarize two initiatives spearheaded by your state’s action coalition. In what ways do these initiatives advance the nursing profession? What barriers to advancement currently exist in your state? How can nursing advocates in your state overcome these barriers?

In Virginia state, the nurse’s association seeks membership of nurses in all areas of the state. The coalition also seeks membership of business leaders and citizens at large with the aim of incorporating all stakeholders in the quest of improving the leadership and improvement of the nursing workforce in the state. Another method that the Virginia state uses to ensure that the recommendations of the ‘future of nursing’ report are the implementation of primary healthcare across the state. Implementation of PHC in the state helps nurses to offer their leadership competence in the grassroots levels and therefore improve the healthcare system of the state. Virginia state has embarked on a number of strategies to implement the future of nursing report. Education, according to the state’s objective by 2020 80% of nurses working in the state should have a degree in nursing because nurses with a higher level of education translate to improved patient outcomes (Wyman &Henly, 2015). Leadership is another important sector; the state aims to increase the influence of nurses in different healthcare sectors.

According to their formulated objective the state seeks to ensure that nurses practice their leadership skills from the bedside to the hospital’s boardrooms and therefore increase their influence. Access to care where the state seeks to ensure that nurses practice to the full extent of their academic training. The state has also banked on the establishment of a collaborative patient-centered healthcare team in order to improve coordination, communication and the quality and safety of care that is offered to the patients and their families(Pittman et al., 2015). Inadequate resources are the main challenge that is witnessed in the implementation of the recommendations in Virginia state. The state advocates are pushing for increased funding of healthcare system

In conclusion, the future of nursing report was developed with the aim of assessing the quality of nursing services offered and establish recommendations that will help in the improvement of care provided. Practicing to the full concept of academic training, achievement of higher academic training, partnering with other stakeholders in the transformation of the healthcare system and the establishment of effective workforce preparation and policy formulation are some of the recommendations of the report. The report recommendations touch on key areas of nursing practice, education and workforce growth. The state-based action coalitions play an important role in championing for the application of the recommendations of the future of nursing report at state, regional and local levels.  Virginia state has established a number of ways of implementing the report, the key areas include strengthening of nursing leadership, access to care, a collaboration of healthcare practitioners, the safety of patients and improvement of the quality of care offered to patients and their families.
