LEGAL AND REGULATORY ISSUES IN NURSING
Introduction
In all professions, there are laws and regulations which govern practice. This also applies to nursing and nurse are required to familiarize themselves with laws and regulations which govern practice to avoid being on the wrong side of the law. Variety of guidelines guide the nurses in making decisions related to nursing care. These guidelines are stipulated under different documents and bodies such basic ethical principles, a state’s Nurse Practice Act, and scope and standards of practice. Sometimes the stipulated laws aren’t compatible with ethics in what is referred to as dilemma.

ANA standards and the Law
The American Nurses Association (ANA) believes that protection of patient privacy and confidentiality are essential in promoting trusting relationships and maintaining integral professional practice (American Nurses Association, 2017). The association supports any standards, legislation, and policies which promote confidentiality of patient’s health information. The law doesn’t support careless and reckless sharing of confidential health information. One can be sued for violating their client’s trust in keeping confidential information private. Both ANA and the law don’t support confidential information sharing.
