Healthy 2020 Budget

The financial year 2017 will have a budget request that will have a total funding of $ 10, 367,765. The 2017 budget is based on the prevention of chronic condition that will serve into helping the States department of health meet its Healthy people 2020 program goals and objectives. Below is an outline of how the funds will be used to counter enable the county meeting the healthy 2020 goals (Koh, Blakey, & Roper, 2014). The funds will be channeled to different health promotion and prevention initiatives as stated below.

Controlling Bacteria Resistant To Antibiotics

The county will set aside $400,000 to detect respond to and prevent antibiotic-resistant infections across all health care set-ups in the communities within the State. The plan is in line with the country’s strategy for combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria (CARB) (Koh, Blakey, & Roper, 2014). The fund will be useful in protecting the communities and patients against bacteria that is resistant to conventional antibiotic therapy. During the 2017 financial year, on top of sustaining the programs started in the previous year, the State’s government will launch new health initiatives. The requested funding will enable full implementation of the prevention, surveillance, and resistance (Barasa, Molyneux, English, & Cleary, 2014).

    The rest of the fund will go into sensitization against the improper use of antibiotics within the long term patient care, inpatient and outpatient areas (Weir et al., 2015). Also the fund will be utilized in expand the public health laboratory capacity in the country.

Health screening for the Indian Americans

Native Americans bear a disproportionate health burden of disease, disability, injury and death in comparison with other races in the State. The health department is looking to set aside $1.5 million the will seek to prevent diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and cerebrovascular accidents. The fund will also be used in lowering the associated risk factors among the Native Americans. The fund will go into addressing the leading causes of death and further incorporate culturally sensitive and driven wellness practices to encourage social, economic, physical, psychological, and emotional well-being (Barasa, Molyneux, English, & Cleary, 2014). This investment by the state’s department of health will enable it to address the chronic diseases, suicide, poor mental health, depression substance abuse and motor vehicle accidents related to drunk driving.

Gun violence prevention research

Approximately $1 million from these funds would be channeled by the state department of health into studies to prevent gun violence. The issue of gun violence has become prevalent in the country and is among the causes of preventable death, injury and disability to many people (Weir et al., 2015). This fund has therefore budgeted for research on how to cut down on gun violence and reduce the cases.

Cancer prevention and control

The fund puts aside 3 million dollars for cancer screening services within the state. The testing will primarily seek to detect the cases early enough for effective treatment of the men and women. Part of this allocation will also go into teaching and sensitization of the public about cancer, its risk factors, and prevention strategies (Koh, Blakey, & Roper, 2014). This fund will build on what had already started from the previous financial year.

Source of funds

The primary source of this funding will be the budgetary allocation to the Department of health by the state government (Barasa, Molyneux, English, & Cleary, 2014). The other sources of revenue include donations and grants from relevant NGOs and private partners in health.
