Guidelines on how to write Research Critique papers
Qualitative Study
Study Background:
– Identify the clinical problem and research problem that prompted the study, focusing on the gaps in knowledge that could enhance healthcare delivery or patient outcomes.
– Determine how the author established the study’s significance, highlighting aspects such as human suffering, treatment costs, or the number of individuals affected by the clinical problem.
– Recognize the purpose of the study, whether explicitly stated or conveyed through study goals, objectives, or aims.
– List the research questions the study aimed to address, inferring them if not explicitly provided.
– Assess whether the purpose and research questions align with the identified problem.
Study Methodology:
– Evaluate the suitability of qualitative methods for addressing the research questions.
– Identify any specific perspective from which the study was developed, if mentioned.
– Determine whether the author referenced relevant quantitative and qualitative studies, as well as other relevant literature.
– Assess the currency of the references, considering that qualitative studies may include older studies that remain relevant.
– Look for indications of the author evaluating or acknowledging the weaknesses of existing studies.
– Evaluate the adequacy of the literature review in constructing a logical argument.
– Determine if the grounded theory method was employed, which may involve developing a framework or diagram based on the study findings.
Study Results:
– Examine the findings of the study.
– Analyze the implications of these findings for nursing practice.
– Explain how the findings contribute to nursing knowledge and science, potentially influencing practice, education, administration, or all areas of nursing.
Ethical Considerations:
– Ascertain if the study received approval from an Institutional Review Board.
– Determine if patient privacy was protected.
– Identify any ethical considerations regarding the treatment or lack thereof.
Conclusion:
– Highlight the importance and coherence of the thesis statement.
– Provide a logical summary to conclude the appraisal, leaving a lasting impression and offering take-away points applicable to nursing practice.
– Include a critical appraisal and brief analysis of the usefulness and applicability of the findings to nursing practice.
– Summarize the acquired knowledge.
