SOLUTION TO THE CASE

Glaucoma is a group of chronically progressive degenerative diseases that causes damage to the optic nerves leading to increased intraocular pressure. The onset age of the condition is 40 years, and risk is increased in individuals with a family history of the diseases, taking oral medications, i.e., prednisolone and preexisting comorbidities such as heart diseases, diabetes, and high blood pressure (Schuster et al., 2020). It’s a lifelong condition; therefore, improved quality of life depends on the patient’s understanding of the condition, prognosis, and management. The nurse should educate the patient about the condition without using any medical jargon to ensure that the patient can comprehend the care. Family members should also be included in the teaching process.

Educate the patient on the importance of daily intraocular pressure measurements to determine if the treatments are effective, severity, and progress in patient management. The pressure should be measured at different times to establish daily pressure intervals. Ensure that the patient knows the instruments used to measure intraocular pressure, such as applanation tonometry, tono –pen, and tono pen Avia (Brusini et al., 2021). The patient should be aware that the measurements are taken when they are supine or upright. The normal ranges of eye pressure are 12-22mmhg, and the patient should go to the clinic if the pressure is greater than 21mmhg.

Encourage the patient to ensure that they are compliant with the daily administration of the medications because this is a chronic condition (Schuster et al., 2020). Patients need to be aware of the correct installation techniques of the eye drops to ensure the effectiveness of the therapy. They should also ensure that they wash hands beforehand to avoid further infections of the eye. Ensure that they observe appropriate dosing of the eye drops as stated and keep the drugs at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness, and drug compliance improves the outcomes.
