Practicum experience- journal entry
Practicum experiences provide a platform at which theory learned is integrated into a practical real-life situation, giving a clear connection between theoretical aspects learned in class and clinical application(Manning & Pogorzelska-Maziarz, 2017). During the practicum, I handled a patient who was diagnosed with asthma in the outpatient clinic. By handling this patient, I got to apply the knowledge I had gained in class about asthma especially on predisposing factors, which I learned through the patient history. This journal entry focuses on the genetic and environmental predisposing factors of asthma.

Case study
Mrs. x came to the outpatient clinic accompanied by her daughter. She is a 38-year-old patient who was diagnosed with asthma while 10 years old. She has been on salbutamol inhaler since then. Last time she was admitted was a month ago when she had an asthmatic attack and was discharged after recovery…
Genetic predisposing factors for asthma
Asthma is an atopic condition. Other atopic conditions include atopic dermatitis, eczema, and rhinitis. Most people vulnerable to atopic conditions genetically have a tendency of hyperactivity of the immune system to allergens, generally referred to as environmental proteins (Liu & Yang, 2015). The allergens include grass pollen, dust, and smoke. Such people are hypersensitive to allergens and produce high numbers of immunoglobin E especially when they inhale the allergens….

Conclusion.
The experience I had while serving Mrs. X provided an opportunity for me to understand asthma better. I was able to relate what we learned in class with the real-life situation. The knowledge I had gained became more meaningful. This developed a desire to have more such experiences after class to manage and understand even more conditions. On top of learning to develop practical skills.
